I was born in Ankara in 1954. After completing my primary, secondary and high school education in TED Ankara College, I started my education at the Faculty of Medicine at Hacettepe University in 1971. After graduating from the Faculty of Medicine in 1977, I began to serve as a research assistant at the Department of Urology at Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University in the same year.  Then, I began to serve as an attending physician at the Department of Urology in 1981. After working as an attending physician in the same department between the years 1981-1983, I completed my military service in Gülhane Military Medical Academy in 1983-1984. After completing my military service, I returned my post in Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University. After passing the scholarship exam organized by the British Council in1985, I went to Cambridge University Addenbrooke’s Hospital in England and made research in the field of Pediatric Urology for a year. I became the associate professor of urology after fulfilling the criteria for associate professorship in 1986. The research we presented to the 7^th National Congress of Cancer was awarded with Bedii Gorbon Award in 1989. After passing the international postdoctoral scholarship exam organized by TUBITAK in the same year, I worked on urological cancer in Urology Clinic, Stanford University, USA for a year. Since 1986, I have been working on urological cancer at our Department of Urology at Hacettepe University. I was selected as one of the three Turkish delegates of the Genitourinary Group in European Organization of Research and Treatment of Cancer in 1991. I was selected for membership in the Administrative Board of the Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University and worked as the member of the Board in 1989-1991. I worked as the vice-coordinator at Faculty of Medicine in 1991-1994. I worked as the assistant secretary general in the 1^st International Workshop on Urooncology in Ankara in 1991. I worked in the editorial boards of different journals including Hacettepe Acta Medica (formerly Hacettepe Medical Journal), Hacettepe Medical Journal and Turkish Clinics Medical Research. I became a full professor in 1993. I was awarded with the Encouragement Award of Tubitak in 1994. I was appointed to the vice-dean post at Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University in 1994. I have been working as the editor of Urology Bulletin since January 1995. I served as the chairperson of 2^nd -9^th International Urooncology Workshop-Congress in Ankara in 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009. After working as the assistant secretary general for the Ankara Association of Urologists in 1998- 2000, I was selected as the president of Ankara Association of Urologists in 2000.

I was selected as a member of the Executive Board of the Council for Coordination of Medical Specialties in 1999 and began to serve this national highest-level civil institution for the education and training of assistants. Then, I was selected as the Second President of the Turkish Association of Urooncology in 1999. I was appointed as the coordinator of the postgraduate education and training in medicine at Hacettepe University in 2000-2003. I served as the president of the Association of Urooncology in 2003-2008.

I was selected as the head of the Department of Urology at Faculty of Medicine, Hacettepe University in March 2004, I left the post in 2008, and got selected again in September 2014. Since 2011, I have been serving as the president of the Board of Competency in the Association of Urological Surgery. I am honored to be selected as the full member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences in 2014.

Furthermore, my three different articles were published in Year Book of Urology, which was published in 1988, 1989 and 1994. Year Book of Urology involves the selected articles of the year. In addition, I was invited as a guest writer of the articles concerning bladder cancer in Current Opinion in Oncology in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997,1998 and 1999. There are 1783 references to my 174 articles indexed in SCI . I am married with two children.

By January 2016, I was appointed as the Rector of Hacettepe University. Presently, I am serving as the president (Rector) of Hacettepe University, and member of ‘Board of Trustees’ of Eastern Mediterranean University in North Cyprus.
